THE 2026 renewal of Cavan’s young stock sport horse sale took place on Thursday, September 24th, when 100 lots went through the ring. The trade was similar to 12 months ago with the clearance rate remaining at 43% and the average price decreased to €3,361 (from €3,789 in 2025). The sole five-figure return was achieved by Patrick Connolly’s bay colt foal CSF Domino (Lot 89), who sold to Fergus Lawlor and Ado Moran for €16,500. By Zirocco Blue out of CSF Dolores, this well-related foal is a half-sibling to several successful show jumpers, including the eight-year-old CSF Dano (1.35m) and the six-year-old CSF Seaview, who jumped in Lanaken under Alan O’Regan last year.
The same partnership of Lawlor and Moran accounted for the third highest-priced lot of the day, when they paid €6,500 for another foal consigned by Patrick Connolly, Lot 37 CSF Nicky. By Emerald Van’T Ruytershof out of CSF Jazzy Lady, this bay colt is a half-brother to the Eoin MacMahon-ridden 1.50m show jumper CSF Ballsbridge, and is out of a full-sister to the international event horse Cooley Killaloe. His pedigree also features WCE Cruco (1.60m) and WCE Falco (1.50m).
Shane Connolly was pleased with the results, commenting: “We were delighted to top the sale and that was a good price for Domino. We didn’t think we would be getting that price on the day the way the sales are going at the minute but he is a really nice foal and got a lot of attention on the day. We were happy too with Nicky and the two foals are going to a very good home where they will be produced well so for us, that is important.”
Matthew McBreen’s Lot 52, a colt foal also by Emerald Van’T Ruytershof out of FSS Riviera, achieved the highest price in the premier foal section and the second-highest price of the day, when he sold to Paddy O’Donnell for €7,600. The bay colt’s damline includes the 1.60m performer FSS Outlaw, as well as FSS Drama Queen (1.40m) and FSS California (1.35m).
Brendan Keown parted with €6,450 for Eamon McArdle’ chesnut colt by Dakar VDL out of CSF Ava. CSF Ava is a half-sister to the 1.50m performers CSF Mr Kroon and CSF Royal Cruise. Lot 72, a bay colt foal consigned by Michael Callery’s Greenacres Stud, who sold to Neal Fearon for €6,200. By Fearon’s own 1.60m ride Cocktail De Talma out of Greenacres Cavalier Luidam, he was described as “a big, scopey, athletic colt and a beautiful mover”. His dam is a full-sister to the Damien Griffen-ridden Mullaghroy Fireheart (1.45m) and a half-sister to Isla Flight, second in the six-year-old final at this year’s Breeders’ Classic.
