CHARLIE Appleby’s Military Order led home a procession in the Listed Bar 1 Betting Diamond Stakes and provided the middle leg of a treble for Billy Lee.

The Godolphin-owned 11/10 favourite hadn’t been sighted in well over a year, however, he was clearly on good terms with himself on the heels of the leaders.

He strode into the lead inside the final quarter of a mile and asserted at the furlong pole. From there, he stayed on strongly to roar in by nine and a half lengths from Geryon.

Lee said: “You would be always worried would they be a bit fresh, but he lobbed away to the start. He lobbed away through the race as well.

“He just took a few strides to get into top gear and, as soon as he did, he was gone. It was a really good performance. He was the class horse on paper and he showed that.”

Appleby also landed this race in its former incarnation as a Group 3 with Cat O’Mountain in 2014.

Two for O’Brien

Lee teamed up with trainer Richard O’Brien for two winners starting with Usuario Amigo (7/2) in the Irishinjuredjockeys.com Handicap over a mile.

The five-year-old gelding was slowly away and off the bridle early, however, he made headway in the final quarter of a mile and improved into second with a furlong to travel.

Front-running Dubai Opulence was still leading but, as he tired, Usuario Amigo finished nicely to get up by three-quarters of a length for owner James A. O’Donoghue.

Lee said: “He walked out of the stalls and wouldn’t go for the first half-furlong. Then they went very quick and he was keen with me. If he’s not pulling, he’s kind of not going. He’s one of those types of horses.

“He loves passing horses and he came home really well. I thought the leader might have been gone, but my lad was just picking up and he galloped out well.”

Caragh Monaghan was suspended for eight race days for frequency with the whip on unplaced Colugo.

Back to his best

O’Brien’s Quatre Bras (9/2) resumed winning ways in the extended 10-furlong handicap for three-year-olds-plus rated 0-80.

The Sea The Stars gelding made headway in the straight for Lee, galloping into the lead a furlong down. The pair made the best way home to hold Camino Lad by half a length for owners Frank J. Lynch and Maria Lynch.

O’Brien said: “The handicapper has been very fair to him throughout the summer. He has kept on dropping him and he had a chance off that mark. He just had to do things right.”

Gary Carroll was banned for eight race days over a careless-riding incident on fifth-placed Steel Cut.

Third time lucky in Haven triumph

HAVEN (6/4 favourite) struck at the third time of asking for Aidan O’Brien in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden over seven furlongs.

Owned by D. Smith, Mrs J. Magnier, M. Tabor and Westerberg, she was sent into an early lead by Wayne Lordan and asserted inside the final furlong to sweep in by three lengths from Castilian Queen.

Stable representative Chris Armstrong said: “Good-moving filly, so we thought she would handle the surface here. She has a very good attitude and will be a lovely filly for next year.

“Possibly get one more run into her, in maybe something like the Silken Glider at the Curragh over a mile. She’s a filly that, whatever she does, this year will be a bonus.”

San Giulio was sent off at an unconsidered 40/1 for the claiming maiden over six furlongs, but proved half a length too good for 3/1 favourite Saint Acclaim.

Showed his engine

The son of Tasleet wandered at the business end, but showed his engine on his second start as he came through to lead with over 100 yards to race for Luke McAteer.

After he delivered by half a length for MRC International, David Marnane said: “He’s still green - he’s actually a nice horse, he has loads of gears, travels really well.

“Very raw off it, but he’s certainly a nice horse. He’s going to go to the Horses In Training Sale, if he is not claimed here. He would be good value.”

All Hail, who finished fourth, was claimed by John McConnell.

Highway takes the road to victory

LESLIE Young’s Highway Sixty One was another 40/1 winner on the card, as he popped up in the mile and a half handicap for three-year-olds-plus rated 0-60.

Mel Sheridan positioned him in mid-division and the four-year-old gelding took closer order in the final quarter mile.

He was guided to the front inside the final furlong and forged on to beat Deluca Chop by half a length in the colours of Mrs Blathnaid Young.

The trainer said: “He was after dropping down off 40 and claiming 7lb. He probably will get a stint up here after tonight. That’s my first winner in Dundalk.”

Caffu Zafeen added to recent Fairyhouse gains when a well-backed winner of the Apprentice Handicap over six furlongs.

Paul Flynn’s charge tracked the leaders and was ridden to go over a furlong out by Shay Wallace.

The 8/11 favourite wasn’t for catching in the closing stages, as he took the honours by a length and a half from Firewalker, for owner Declan Sheridan.

Wallace said: “He has improved again. In fairness, once he got his head in front on Monday, I think that has helped his confidence a lot.

“There’s not a bother on him; he’s kind of a straightforward horse. I’d say there is a bright future for him, hopefully.”
